Xiaomi Mi Drone Crowdfunding Closed After 3,000 Orders
Mi Drone

The initial batch of Mi Drones is sold out. Ships July 7.

Xiaomi unveiled on Wednesday the Mi Drone. The Chinese consumer electronics company surprised with a extreme low price for the Mi Drone with 4K camera. The Mi Drone 4K sells for $460 (2,999 Yuan) and the HD version sells for $380 (2,499 Yuan). The Mi Drone HD is not only inferior in video quality but also range. The $80 more for the 4K version are well worth it. Chinese drone fans have got the first dibs on the Mi Drone in a crowdfunding sort of initial sale.

Why Xiaomi chose crowdfunding as pre-sale is more a marketing stunt than necessity. Xiaomi set a goal to sell 500 Mi Drones in the crowdfunding campaign and closed the campaign after receiving 3,000 orders for the Mi Drone. The company states to ship the Mi Drones to the "supporters" on July 7.

The Mi Drone is supposed to go on regular sale somewhen this summer. The timing for the release in the United States is not known yet. We expect that it will take until Fall.

Xiaomi developed a drone that can compete with the drones offered by established drone makers like DJI. This is quite remarkable. The Mi Drone is designed to be easy to use and has several safety features.

Mi Drone pilots can chose between several autopilot features and fly 27-min non-stop with 720p live video up to range of 2km. The Mi Drone remote connects to a smartphone as screen for the live video feed. The camera is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal that keeps the camera steady at all times.
