The movie earned $35.5 million which is more than anyone was anticipating. It still performed poorly compared to the first part that released in 2014. The first installment managed to gross $65 million to round off a total $493 million at the worldwide box office, according to Variety.
Paramount Studios had assured the fans and the critics that the movie would be better. The previous installment was very much a disappointment for everyone.
The critics did not fare it well. The audience gave it a B Cinema score. According to Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, first installment fared better because of the audience. The TMNT lovers turned up to see their favorite reptilian superheroes in action.
This time around however, they knew what to expect. This might have damaged the credibility of the movie. The critics bashed the sequel as well. The audience however fared the sequel better. They gave A- Cinema score to the movie.
The other reason that experts are attributing to the movie’s low performance is the sequel problem. Lately, there have been a lot of sequels. They have been suffering the same fate.
People already know what to expect from the movie. The studios are somehow failing at generating enough charisma for the sequels as they do for originals.
That is why, Jojo Moyes’ novel’s ‘Me Before You’ film adaptation was such a fresh break at the box office. The movie starred Sam Claffin and Emilia Clarke. The movie managed to earn $18.5 million on the box office.
