Just a short while before Prince's death, he signed a deal with Tidal so that they could exclusively stream his discography. Since today would have been the late music legend's 58th birthday, they decided to celebrate him by making over a dozen albums available that might not be as well known as some of his others. These albums include studio albums, remixes, compilations, and live albums. Most of the albums date back to the 90s and early 00s. The oldest release is the 1987 album The Black Album and the newest is a live album called Indigo Nights, which was released in 2008.
There isn't much that these albums have in common with each other. Some of them are a bit strange and others don't really highlight the best of what he was capable of doing. However, a lot of these albums come from the time right after he stopped working with Warner Bros., so it was very experimental and filled with haunting spirituality and exploration.
Listen through them and find the gems, though they certainly all don't fall into that category.
Prince was one of the most vocal Tidal supporters every since the service launched last year. He took his music from the other services and released his final two albums, HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two, only on Tidal.
"After one meeting, it was obvious that Jay-Z and the team he has assembled at Tidal recognize and applaud the effort that real musicians put in2 their craft," wrote Prince in an August 2015 statement. "Tidal have honored us with a non-restrictive arrangement... we're extremely grateful 4 their generous support."
