The Russians plan on setting up a permanent lunar base by the time 2030 rolls in. Already they want to send 12 cosmonauts to the surface of the moon.

Russia wants to colonize the moon. The delineation of this plan has already begun in earnest. Roscosmos, the space agency of Russia, announced the news that a dozen cosmonauts will set up bases on the moon’s surface soon.

While the express purpose of this colonization is the mining of minerals and further research, in fact one of the goals is to conduct military exercises.

In the beginning, only a handful of people will set up a research station on the moon. It is later on that the rest of the cosmonauts will join them and so the number will rise to 12, according to SputnikNews. This station will be powered by an energy base which will lie towards the polar region of the moon.

There will even be an underground shelter of sorts in which the cosmonauts can hide to escape from nuclear fallout and radiation. Roscosmos will launch a moon probe sometime in 2024. The purpose of this will be to search for colony space on the moon.

By the time 2030 arrives, the first Russian colonies will begin to burgeon on the moon’s surface. TASS reported that the Luna 25 lander will serve to aid human exploration and curiosity about the moon.

Also a heavy lift carrier rocket called the Angara A5V is in the pipeline. It will carry spare parts for the colonies to the moon. The migration will occur in six separate steps.

Each time a launch takes place, a novel module will reach the lunar landscape. Thus the base will be put together in a piecemeal manner. This was the same way the ISS was assembled in space.

It will take a decade for the colony to get constructed from scratch. Several complex forces are conspiring to create the conditions for this colonization of the moon.

The Russian company Energia has a role to play in the stakes involved in this great game. Also the Ryvok project is a fundamental part of the whole endeavor. Russia has never landed a man on the moon. The plans were ditched after the Apollo landings by NASA in the 1960s.

Today however it is a whole different ball game. The conditions that applied way back than are not valid anymore. A resurgent Russia may not only have the ability to send manned spacecraft to the moon but may also be capable of setting up colonies there in the final analysis.
