  • Iran puts an Embargo on Pokemon Go calling it a Security Risk

Iran is the first country that has put an embargo on Pokemon Go calling it a security risk.

Pokemon Go has broken all previous records in matters of popularity (and notoriety). It has reached over 35 countries worldwide. It is the augmented reality game par excellence that people are just crazy about.

However, Iran has banned the game from entering its borders. The reasons given were vague. They included the game being deemed a security risk. The Iranian agency that oversaw online activity has put a prohibition on the recreational use of the game within the country.

Despite the fact that several countries have already stated this much that the game had its concomitant risks, they didn’t go to such extreme extents as putting an outright ban on it.

Yet Iran has done just such a thing. It is in fact the very first country in the global village to have taken this drastic step, according to BBC. Pokemon Go has had a 100 million downloads so far.

It has consistently pulled in $10 million on a daily basis. That is indeed lucrative and shows that this game has a seductive influence on its players.

As the game players go about in the great outdoors searching for the buried monsters, they sometimes tend to forget to practice some safety measures.

This has proved problematic. Just like the Internet requires “Netiquette” so Pokemon Go also has to be played with a few guidelines in mind. Otherwise players can undergo serious mishaps and accidents since they tend to be so absorbed in the context of the game.

Meanwhile, in Iran, despite strict laws, many people have managed to gain access to the game via VPNs. Iran has banned video games before and this is not the first such instance of the conservative nation putting a kibosh on some foreign imported stuff.

Already such games and narratives as 1979 Revolution and Battlefield 3 were banned in the country. That was because they explored the controversial topics of the 1979 upheaval in Iran and a raid on Tehran by the USA respectively.

The game known as Pokemon Go has to pass through the state-sponsored censorship agency which acts like a filter. Since it did not meet the criteria properly, the result for better or for worse is a ban on Pokemon Go.

According to the agency’s representatives, those behind this game must comply with the rules and regulations of the country they want to popularize their game in. If they cannot do this, than they have no right to complain when it is banned in retaliation.
