The Sony PlayStation Meeting will be taking place in the PlayStation Theater on Time Square in New York at 3pm ET, Wednesday, Sept. 7. Sony will live stream the PlayStation Meeting online. Sony confirmed the live streaming option to Polygon. Details about the Sony PlayStation Meeting live video stream will be announced closer to the event.
Sony did not confirm that the PlayStation Meeting will be about the new PlayStation Neo console, but most industry insiders assume that. The official name of the upgraded Sony PlayStation is not known. Rumored names are PlayStation Neo, PlayStaton 4.5 and PlayStation 4K. The PS Neo is set to compete with the Microsoft Scorpio console. Microsoft announced at the E3 that the Xbox Project Scorpio console has 6 Teraflops of performance compared to 1.31 Teraflops the Xbox One is offering. While this sounds fantastic, Scorpio is not coming in 2016. It is scheduled for release in fall of 2017.
Sony's Neo console is though expected to go on sale in time of the release of the PlayStation VR headset. Sony is set to ride the home VR wave as much as possible. Sony will land a home run with its virtual reality offering in 2016, pushing Oculus and HTC to the side. Microsoft is dead in the water in 2016 in respect to virtual reality, leaving everything to Sony.
The Sony September 7 event will be one to watch. Video game and virtual reality fans will find out just how powerful the Sony PlayStation Neo is and how much money they will have to invest to own it.
We will update this report as soon as Sony releases more details about the PlayStation Meeting event.
