It has been found that the Zika Virus may cause a number of other ailments too.

A study found a link between the Zika Virus and a rare type of joint deformity. This joint affliction occurred in babies. The discovery has set off alarm bells regarding the host of other ailments that may show up in babies with the Zika Virus as they grow up.

The developmental difficulties are still to be seen in the babies and will only be visible when they have reached their prime.

Thus microcephaly, in which the babies’ heads are small, could just be one of several symptoms that occur as the babies grow up. The Zika Virus is like an iceberg, most of the linked ailments still lie below the surface.

They have yet to manifest themselves. The Zika Virus is caused by mosquitoes and it is currently existent in over 50 countries. Most of these countries are in Latin America.

The severe joint condition the virus is linked with has been termed arthrogryposis. There are problems with joint movements and muscular weakness in this disease. The joints are fixated in curved, bowed and grotesque positions.

The fetus may not be able to move about in the womb thereby leading to this issue. Thus we see that the Zika Virus is possibly linked with a spectrum of disorders.

Some of the scientists studying this are hardly surprised. This is what they expected since the real issues connected to a disease arrive later on in the future.

Thus you have a situation where children who appear to be fine for the time being may later on in their lives develop severe symptoms related to the Zika Virus.

Such things as hearing defects, visual problems and intellectual disabilities will appear in the future among babies born with the Zika Virus. When they come of age, these ugly symptoms will rear their heads.

The joint disorder which has been found to occur in Zika Virus babies is an extremely rare phenomenon. More research still needs to be done to make sure that the joint disorder is linked with the Zika Virus only. The scientists are working on this front at a feverish pitch.

This research got published in the journal BMJ
