The top trending hashtag this morning on Twitter is #savetwitter. Will Twitter shut down in 2017?

Twitter is shutting down in 2017. Really? According to viral hoax yes. Twitter is on fire this morning under the top trending hashtag #savetwitter. A story goes rampant about how Twitter is getting shut down in early 2017 over cyber bullying.

Obviously Twitter is not getting shut down because of the cyber bullying that is going on on the micro-blogging site. Cyber bullying is a problem in any social network including Facebook.

The origin of #savetwitter seems to be a technical glitch about 9 to 10 hours ago. From there the hashtag changed its meaning thanks in part to Youtuber BradTheLadLong, who posted: "I apologize to those who love Twitter but the abuse I got on here was disgusting and that is why action needed to be taken. #SaveTwitter" about 9 hours ago.  Then @Official_Walsh shared a text picking up BradTheLadLong's curve ball and adding stuffl about how the Youtuber stored every hate mail he got to use as evidence to shut down Twitter.

Users apparently really fear losing their beloved Twitter. Messages like "This is my stress reliever, my second home, and my happiness. why would you even wanna shut twitter down?" by @qoldwater or "If we'll lose Twitter, we'll lose the only one social network where we can be what we really are" by @RisaAviator show how seriously people take things that trend on Twitter. It's like those infamous death hoax: Oh! Bill Murray trends, he must have died.

The mechanics of a super trending hashtag are weird and hard to understand. I don't think there is a recipe, sometimes this just happens.

Twitter is in trouble because of dropping revenues and not because of cyber bullying. The company is struggling to monetize its users. You can #savetwitter by clicking their ads. See below the best Tweets in response to the #savetwitter hoax.

The #savetwitter hashtag is still trending #1 in the United States as of 7am ET. It will likely continue to go strong as Americans wake up and be puzzled by the #savetwitter trending hashtag, trying to find out what is happening.

Update: There is no end in sight for #savetwitter as big media is now covering the viral hashtag. #savetwitter is now entering the mainstream echo chamber, keeping it alive even longer. Wider coverage might though also kill the hashtag as radio news and TV news broadcast might soon inform people that Twitter is not going to be shut down in early 2017.
