MTV VMAs witnessed some of the best red carpet appearances, great performances and awesome winning moments.
The 33rd Annual MTV Video Music Awards kicked off with a flair this Sunday when some of the biggest music stars attended the award show. A handful of these stars were nominated to win the famous Moon Man, some were there to perform and some were there just to have fun. The ceremony took place in the famed Madison Square Garden in New York.
The Red Carpet
The first event of the show was the red carpet. The artists, performers, presenters and guests arrived in style on the red carpet. It was the night to dazzle for all the nominees and make a statement even. That is what Beyoncé did.
She arrived on the red carpet in a dazzling white sequins and feathers dress accompanied by her little daughter Blue Ivy who also dazzled in a $11,000 golden sequined dress.
Beyoncé was accompanied by the victims of gun violence who posed with the star and her daughter. Kim Kardashian, who is known for red carpet domination flaunted her figure fully in a sheer black, low cut black dress accompanied by husband Kanye West who was a nominee for the night.
Kanye wore white all over with the title of his song “Famous” on his shirt. Ariana Grande who was also nominated for the night wore a black ruffled tank top with black pants and her very stylish bangs.
Nick Jonas also overtook some fans’ hearts as he walked the red carpet in a black and white patterned jacket.
Aly Raisman, Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez and Simone Biles also dazzled on the red carpet representing Team USA.
Jaden Smith also made a statement with his own style of clothes. Many stars dazzled in their best attires for the night.
The pre-show performances included Alessia Cara and Troye Sivan performed 'Wild Things,' 'Wild' & 'Scars To Your Beautiful' followed by Jidenna performing “Little Bit More’ and Lukas Graham performed his hit ‘Mama Said’.
The performances on the show were equally electrifying. A concert in its own, the MTV Video Music Awards are known for putting up a great show that offers the best in music and performances.
This year’s performances were some of the greatest in VMAs history. The show was opened by Rihanna all dressed in candy pink along with her backup dancers.
She belted out a medley of her songs ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music’, ‘We Found Love’ and ‘Where Have You Been?’ The Chainsmokers and Halsey performed their hit single ‘Closer’ which got a little steamy by the end but they kept on singing.
One of the show’s anticipated performance was Britney Spears who performed in a yellow outfit to new hit, "Make Me Move," with G-Eazy. Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj were also pretty in pink when they performed ‘Side to Side’.
Rihanna took the stage a second time with a party theme wearing a cap, fluffy crop top and pants as she performed yet another medly of songs including ‘Rude Boy’, ‘What’s My Name’ and ‘Work’ which included twerking.
Future performed for the first time on the VMAs singing "[Expletive] up Some Commas" in red. Rihanna took the stage once more all in black with backstage performers wearing black shirts with Rihanna printed on them.
The songstress sang ‘Needed Me’, ‘Pour It Up’ and ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’. Nick Jonas also performed Bacon with Ty Dolla $ign. Rihanna’s final performance was a picture of perfection in white and beige, complete with a piano.
Rihanna herself was a vision in a beautiful asymmetrical beige floor length dress as she sang another medley of her soulful hits, ‘Stay’, ‘Diamonds’ and ‘Love on the Brain’.
Did you all think that Queen B didn’t perform? She took the stage in her signature style to perform an incredible Lemonade album medley complete with high tempo dance routine, which lasted for 16 minutes. It was incredible but the night was full of incredible moments.
The Presenters and the Winners
Before we dig into the winners, let us go over the multitude of people that presented the performances and the awards on this great night.
The presenters for the night included, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Ansel Elgort, Jimmy Fallon, Fifth Harmony, Kim Kardashian, Alicia Keys, Tove Lo, Shameik Moore, Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman, Rita Ora, Michael Phelps, Bebe Rexha, Jaden Smith and more.
The presenters honored each star during the show whether they were performing or they won the award. The biggest winner of the night was Beyoncé with seven awards in total including the prestigious prize for video of the year for the track Formation.
She thanked her husband Jay Z and her daughter for their support and love during her acceptance speech. She also won in the category for Best Female Video, Best Direction, Best Pop Video, Breakthrough long form video, Best Choreography, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.
Calvin Harris [ft Rihanna]: This Is What You Came For won the award for the Best Male Video. Fifth Harmony [ft Ty Dolla $ign]: Work From Home for the Best Collaboration.
Twenty one pilots won the Best Rock Video for Heathens. Calvin Harris won again along with the Disciples for Best Electronic Video for ‘How Deep Is Your Love’.
DNCE won the Moon Man for the Best New Artist. David Bowie’s Blackstar won the Best Art Direction honors. Coldplay’s Up&Up won the Moon Man for Best Visual Effects.
The Best Hip Hop Video was won by Drake for Hotline Bling. He also got on the stage to present the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award to his rumored love Rihanna.
His speech left no doubt in our minds as he confessed to looking up to her, finding a friend in her and loving her as she received the Moon Man from his and they shared a loving embrace on the stage.
It was an amazing night with not a single dull moment.
