Yes we all agree Samsung Gear S2 was far from perfect but still managed to steal the limelight from Motorola’s Moto 360 which remained unchallenged for a long period of time. Samsung today has unveiled the Gear S3 during IFA at Berlin and gave a peek at whats next.

Last year Gear S2 came with two variants, Gear S2 (Sports) and Gear S2 Classic and this year too Samsung has announced two variants for the Gear S3 namely the Gear S3 Classic and the Gear S3 Frontier. Both the variants are identical in terms of hardware but the Frontier has a masculine look with textured rotating bezel with hour and minute marks. The Back and Home buttons on the Frontier are textured too giving it a sturdy look.
The Classic on the other hand is truly classic with unmarked rotating bezel and a 316L stainless steel body. Both the versions are IP68 rated for water resistance and Samsung has used recently announced Gorilla Glass SR+ for the protection of the 1.3 display. According to Corning the new Gorilla Glass SR+ is almost as scratch-resistant as sapphire. Talking about the specs, both the variants are powered by the same dual-core Exynos chipsets and 786MB of RAM. They come with 4GB of internal storage and features a standalone GPS radios and 380mAh batteries. Samsung claims both the watches should last between three to four days on a single charge. Really??? We have to wait before we get our hands on the watch.
Many S2 users loved it for its size, but those with smaller wrists will be disappointed to know that this year Gear S3 is bigger and features a larger 1.3’ display. Gear S3 is now 46mm in diameter with no smaller version. Motorola offered Moto 360 in two sizes so people with smaller wrists don't feel left out. Coming to the bands, standard 22mm band are back but the Frontier is available in black and only with rubber bands. The Classic however comes in silver and that too with leather bands. Gear S3 Frontier has a built-in LTE radio along with Bluetooth and WiFi transmitters while the Classic only has Bluetooth and WiFi.
Not to forget Frontier gets an in-built speaker and mic for calls and dictation. You can now make HD calls over LTE network which was missing in the Gear S2. Samsung has added some nice tricks taken from their Galaxy lineup to the Gear S3. The Always On Display is now available on the Gear S3 too and now you can even see the second hand tick! The Gear S2 managed just 8 colors while the Gear S3 can access full 16 million colors during the AOD mode which looks super cool. We will have to see the battery life of the Gear S3 while AOD is activated. Did I forget to mention it runs on the Tizen!!
Other tricks include accepting/rejecting calls, snoozing the alarm by just rotating the bezel. To do list and reminders are now included and saves a lot of time. One of the biggest changes according to us in the addition of Samsung Pay with MST and NFC technology. Now you can pay for your coffee or burger with your Gear S3 and thats what makes it a smartwatch!! Samsung says Gear S3 will be available in Q4,2016 but remained silent on the pricing. Maybe Samsung is waiting for Apple to announce the much awaited Apple Watch 2 and then they can price it accordingly. Smart move Samsung!!
