  • A Newly Discovered Antibody fights Alzheimer’s Disease to a Considerable Degree

A newly discovered antibody apparently fights Alzheimer’s Disease to a considerable degree. It removes the deadly amyloid brain plaques commonly found in the disease.

Aducanumab, which is an antibody, has been synthesized in the lab in order to be used in the armor of medical weapons against Alzheimer’s Disease. It causes a substantial clean-up of the deleterious beta-amyloid plaques in patients with early onset of the scourge known as Alzheimer’s Disease.

The protein traces found in the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers are a classic symptom of the disease. They eventually lead to the complete degeneration of the human brain which is a sad sight to behold.

A study showed that after a year long course of Aducanumab, the decline in mental powers of the treated group slowed down relative to a placebo group.

Thus this wonderful biological agent can work miracles in real life. The cause of Alzheimer’s Disease remains a mystery though.

What is clear is that the amyloid depositions begin many years in advance before memory loss has even started showing  its ravaging effects. Aducanumab binds brain plaques and thus microglial cells ultimately remove the vast majority of these plaques.

A single year long study showed that nearly all the plaques were removed from the brains of Alzheimer’s sufferers. The remarkable results of the study have been published in the science journal Nature.

All this is cause for hope and a guarded optimism. By taking blood samples from patients who were up to a hundred years old, the antibodies were made.

These antibodies do recognize and destroy the amyloid plaques but they do not attack the nerve cells which are to be protected from any damage.

Therein lies their significance as selective agents of specific clean-up on an operational basis. Since Aducanumab is of purely human origin, it is especially suitable for usage in human beings who are facing the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s.

Over 165 patients were treated with the drug in the course of the study. The wonder drug proved to be such a marvelous antidote to Alzheimer’s that it all came as somewhat of a pleasant shock to the researchers.

Many of the symptoms of the disease vanished without a trace too. The placebo group couldn’t hold a candle to the group treated with Aducanumab.

Thus this antibody holds the power to virtually reverse Alzheimer’s Disease to a considerable extent. It is just the thing that gerontologists had been looking for all along.
