Now there is a reason to get a 4K Ultra HD TV with HDR.

The Sony PS4 Pro is going to be the biggest source of 4K HDR content when it launches on November 10. Sony accelerates with the PS4 Pro the adoption of the latest TV technologies. Consumers who jumped on 4K UHD TVs to early are missing out on the power of HDR (High Dynamic Range).

The PS4 Pro is $100 more expensive than the new slim Sony PS4, but offers besides 4K also a 1TB HDD. The extra cost of the PS4 Pro is not the issues, it is the cost of a optimal 4K Ultra HD with HDR support. The UHD alliance announced at the CES 2016 the Ultra HD Premium logo and certification.

4K UHD TVs with the Ultra HD Premium logo are a safe choice for the Sony PS4 Pro. The Ultra HD Premium logo is reserved for TVs that match the performance metrics for resolution, high dynamic range (HDR), peak luminance, black levels and wide color gamut among others.

Back in April 30 TVs have been certified. In Fall this number will by much higher. Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Hisense, Sharp and Toshiba are among the major TV brands members of the UHD. Not all TV makers are members of the UHD, but still offer HDR capable TV such as Vizio. The American TV maker has criticized the certification program in the past.

Sony apparently does not like the look of the Ultra HD Premium logo and has its own 4K HDR logo.

With TVs that have the Ultra HD Premium logo, you cannot go wrong. 4K UHD HDR TV that do not have that logo require a closer look at the specifications. To work best with the Sony PS4 Pro, a TV needs to support besides 4K and HDR a very high peak brightness of over 1,000nits. OLED TV s with HDR do not need that high brightness as OLED TVs do not have a backlight.

A qualified TV also needs to support 10-bit color and understand source signals with the Rec. 2020 color space. On top of that the TV needs to display at least 90% of the DCI-P3 color space. Now you understand why the Ultra HD Premium logo is a good idea. It makes the purchase of a 4K HDR TV much, much easier.

Retailers have not yet adopted the Ultra HD Premium logo in a way to make it easy to see all certified 4K HDR TVs in one place. So far we have identified the following 4K UHD TVs that are meeting the Ultra HD Premium criteria.
