SpaceX has tried its Raptor rocket on for size. It will take human beings to the planet Mars in the future.
SpaceX has test-fired its Raptor rocket. This is supposed to take human beings to the Red Planet by 2024. Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of SpaceX, announced this in a series of tweets.
The rocket engine was fired at the McGregor, Texas spot where a stand was installed that could take the high thrust force. Musk said that the “Mach Diamonds” from the test were exactly what was needed.
He spoke of how the production goal was an impulse of 382 seconds and a thrust of 3 MN was generated. That was more than 3 times that of the Falcon 9 rocket.
Production Raptor goal is specific impulse of 382 seconds and thrust of 3 MN (~310 metric tons) at 300 bar— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 26, 2016
With nine methane-fueled motors, the Red Dragon will be more powerful than any other rocket. It will be responsible for lifting the Mars Colonial Transporter that is filled with 100 tons of cargo.
Chamber pressure is almost 3X Merlin, so engine is about the same size for a given area ratio— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 26, 2016
The goal is the Red Planet. By the time 2018 arrives an unmanned spacecraft will be sent to this ultimate destination. Also by the time 2024 comes along human beings will be sent to Mars.
This is indeed a very ambitious goal. It is not an easy task to accomplish. Considering the recent mishap at SpaceX, this may seem a premature step, yet it could also prove to be a success.
Elon Musk will talk regarding this test-firing at the IAC in Mexico tomorrow. The topic of his speech will be the making of humankind into a multiplanetary species.
The design of the Mars Colonial Transporter will be expatiated upon. Also the means to be employed towards the colonization of Mars will be laid out in the open.
The budget will be discussed to boot. The governmental support for such extravagant ventures will be the crux of the argument made by Elon Musk.
The colonization of Mars is supposed to proceed in such a manner that a human settlement will be the goal. This will occur in ten years starting from the time when human beings will land on its surface.
