Don't Miss: Nintendo Switch: Everything You Need To Know
Sony and Microsoft have seemingly been in a race for the last few years to see who could release the best console. However, they have forgotten about Nintendo, who has taken a more creative approach to their hardware. The Wii U struggled to sell, so Nintendo has to come out with something that is truly impressive.
Update: Nintendo NX will be unveiled on October 20 with a Nintendo NX trailer.
Still, the announcement of a brand new console should be surprising.
We don’t actually know all that much about the console yet. Late Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata talked about the Nintendo NX back in 2015. Nintendo confirmed that the NX will launch in March 2017, but they are missing all of the big tech conferences in 2016 – not the best sign.
When Will the Nintendo NX Launch?
Nintendo told investors to expect the launch in March 2017, and that coincides with the delay of detailed Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which was originally slated for a 2016 release, and it will now be released with the NX. That game will also be available on Wii U, according to a tweet from Nintendo.
Whatever launch plan Nintendo has, it has been in motion already. Still, rumors from the blog Digitimes says that the launch date might be pushed back because there was a delay in the hardware production to “early 2017.” It is unclear if this means the launch will be pushed back or they will only release a limited number.
As of September 29, 2016, Nintendo of Canada's communications manager Andrew Collins said: "Nintendo Directs are actually presented to the communications teams much closer to their release," he said. He said that one will take place soon to discuss "Animal Crossing: New Leaf."
In a now-retracted interview, he also said: "Nintendo is not ready to discuss [the NX] yet," Collins reportedly said. "Once we are, Nintendo will most likely hold a Nintendo Direct in the future - before launch - to discuss it."
According to rumors, the reveal date for the Nintendo NX will be October 21, 2016. This reveal will take place in the typical fashion: a pre-recorded online broadcast. They will likely announce some of the games that will come along with the system as well as the price. Some fans have theorized that it could be November 10 as well.
At launch, there will be four well-known titles released at the same time. The major one is said to be Mario Bros., which will have a major role in the marketing of the game as well.
There is a thought that there will be a delay with the Nintendo NX because it will decrease competition from not only other consoles but with other electronics as well.
How Much Will Nintendo NX Cost?
According to rumors, the Nintendo NX will have a base cost of $299.99. There is also going to be a bundle that will likely start at $399.99, but what exactly will go into the bundle is not yet known.
What form will the Nintendo NX Take?
Many people have speculated that the new Nintendo console, Nintendo NX, will be a portable device and a TV-bound console at the same time. This rumor goes all the way back to a 2014 post on Nintendo News. Later rumors said that the NX will be a powerful handheld device, and it will come with two detachable controllers. At home, it is pluggable for the base station and TV playing.
Whatever form it takes, the Nintendo NX is very exciting. Yves Guillemot of Ubisoft is building up interesting that it will be revolutionary, saying: “The new Nintendo [gaming system] is a fantastic machine,” Guillemot said at a separate Ubisoft presentation earlier this month. “It’s really a new approach. It’s really Nintendo — coming with something new again. We love it.”
New reports show that, according to popular YouTube user boogie2988, the handheld isn't as technologically advanced as we may have wanted it to be. "I've talked to people [at Ubisoft] who have used [the NX]," he said. "Let's say you could play 'Assassin's Creed' once you have your handheld plugged into your console. And then, you could then detach the thing and take it with you and play the 'Assassin's Creed' mobile game out of your pocket."
This likely means that while you can take the game on the go, you might only be able to play certain parts, much like you would on a mobile game. To see if you like the game, the Nintendo NX will offer beta and trial version in stores around February.
Nintendo NX Split Directional Pad
Following a report from Let’s Play Video Games, rumors started to fly about the Nintendo NX controller using a split directional pad. That same report said that the NX controller will have a “share” button that is quite similar to the one on the DualShock 4. This button would connect you to the various social media services.
Cartridges with the Nintendo NX
The Wall Street Journal reported that the NX will have a type of cartridge, though it will likely be smaller than the ones used in current consoles.
Pokémon and Mario on Nintendo NX
Nintendo will obviously include the games of some of its biggest franchises, including Pokémon and Mario. These are the fastest and highest selling properties, so their presence at the start could help with those crucial initial sales.
There has been confirmation from both the Pokémon and Mario franchises that we will see a game or games within the first six months of release. There have also been rumors that Nintendo is courting Sega, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros to help collect their audiences.
Breath of the Wild on Nintendo NX
The Legend of Zelda will be released for both the Wii U and Nintendo NX gaming systems simultaneously in 2017. Anything that could differ between the two games will be minor, according to a discussion between GameSpot and Eliji Aonuma: “The users will be able to have the same experience with the NX version as they will with the Wii U version.”
Dragon Quest X and XI on Nintendo NX
Square Enix announced that it will bring Dragon Quest Xi to the NX, as well as some form of Dragon Quest X, which hasn't been released outside of Japan. Serie creator Yuji Horii confirmed that Dragon Quest XI will come to the NX to Nintendo Dream, a Japanese magazine. He also explained that there will be three versions of the game that will have slightly differing looks thanks to the hardware capabilities of each platform.
Super Smash Bros. NX
Another early rumor for the Nintendo NX was the release of a new Super Smash bros game. According to Kantan Games CEO Serkan Toto, there should be a new game on the way. He tweeted that it will be entirely new and not a port of the current version.
Of course, Toto didn't name his source, so you do have to take that with a grain of salt. He has a good record to handing out Nintendo rumors and insights, having broken the mobile gaming news before the company did.
Just Dance 2017
Ubisoft has talked a lot about the new Nintendo NX, and its Just Dance title is a large part of why so many people are excited for the new console. Nintendo and Ubisoft brought Just Dance to popular knowledge in 2009, and they hope to continue their success.
Executive Director of Ubisoft’s EMEA division, Alain Corre, told MVC that they were “working closely” with Nintendo on the new Just Dance. “We have always appreciated the relationship with Nintendo, the co-creation and the fact that they are really concentrating on quality,” he said. “We have done a lot of products and successes with Nintendo in the past, and we believe that the NX will recapture a lot of lapsed Wii players,” said Corre.
Let’s Play Video Games reported Just Dance 2017 will be a Nintendo NX launch title, which is highly likely.
Why to Look Forward to the Nintendo NX
Don't Miss: Nintendo Switch: Everything You Need To Know
It looks like the Nintendo NX is going to be one of the best mergers possible for Nintendo – that of a handheld and a console. Nintendo has also been strong in their handheld market – the original Game Boy was a rite of passage for most children, and the DS is one of the most successful video game consoles of all time. The 3DS is incredibly successful as well, even during a smartphone boom.
