Rumors popped up this week that Spongebob Squarepants, the beloved animated show, was cancelled after 17 years on air.
A fake image appeared on social media that said: “After 17 years on TV, SpongeBob Squarepants is officially being cancelled on October 17th, 2016.”
It has been confirmed by a representative for Nickelodeon in a discussion with Snopes that the whole thing was a hoax, and the cartoon is set to air for a long time coming.
Viewers were absolutely distraught, saying that they were dreading the end of a show that so many of us grew up watching. It is one of the few hold-outs from the animated shows of the 90s and early 2000s.
Someone on social media joked when they found out that it was all a joke: “What kind of sick freak would make up that Spongebob is being cancelled man?”
There have been over 200 episodes over the show's ten seasons, the program has won six Anne Awards, eight Golden Reel Awards, and to two Emmys.
It has even spawned two movies, the first in 2004 and the second just this last year. And it looks like the story isn't over.
