HP Mini 2140 Netbook put up against Asus Eee PC 1000HE

In our series of featuring netbooks and compare them with the comparable category leader we today look at the HP Mini 2140 . HP makes more waves these days with the HP Mini 1151NR netbook as this one will be offered by Verizon as their first subsidized 3G netbook. The Verizon $199.99 deal would be lot more exciting if they would have picked the HP Mini 2140.

Description
The HP Mini 2140 comes with the advanced 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, expandable 1GB/2GB RAM, 160 GB HDD and GMA 950. It also features Gigabit Ethernet, WLAN, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 802.11 a/b/g/n (draft), Win XP Home and 10.1" Widescreen TFT.
The dimensions of the 2140 are 10.3 x 6.5 x 1.05 in (261.4 x 166.2 x 26.7 mm). Its weight starts at 2.6 lb (1.19 kg). Its 6-cell provides up to 10 hours of battery life. HP has given the 2140 a durable chassis and they also claim that it has fast recharging times. This netbook is also characterized by a 92 percent of full-size keyboard, which according to HP is water-resistant and 50 times more impervious to visible wear compared to a standard keyboard. Its touchpad however is very cramped at 2.3 x 1.1 inches.

Comparison
The Asus Eee 1000HE is currently the most favored netbook on Amazon.com . Let’s compare the HP Mini 2140 with the Asus Eee 100HE to understand if the 2140 is a valid netbook purchase option.

Both the HP Mini 2140 and the Asus Eee 1000HE feature a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 10 inch LED screen, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, and a 1.3MP camera. Both of them also have a 92 percent of full-size keyboard.

The dimensions of 10.3 x 6.5 x 1.05 inches means that the HP Mini 2140 is less thick than the 1000HE on all parts whose dimensions are 10.47 (W) x 7.53 (D) x 1.12-1.50 (H) inches. The 1000HE has a slightly bigger touchpad in comparison with the 2140 whose touchpad measurements are 2.5 x 1.1 inches.
The HP Mini 2140 at a weight of 3 pounds is slightly lighter than the Asus Eee 1000HE whose weight stands at 3.2 pounds. The 2140 is however costlier than the 1000HE with their costs being $450 and $387.98 respectively.

Verdict
The above comparison between the HP Mini 2140 and the Asus Eee 1000HE reveals that the 1000HE still offers a better deal. The 2140’s cramped touchpad and side-mounted vertical buttons makes the 1000HE a better choice. However, its durable chassis and water-resistant, impervious to visible wear keyboard will appeal to business travelers. It is too costly as well compared to the 1000HE. The HP Mini 2140 is available also with Windows Vista as well, which might be interesting to some.

Where to Buy
