Often scheduled maintenance means that we are getting new features in Xbox Live, that is not the case in this instance. According to Major Nelson, there will be no noticeable difference once Xbox Live comes back online.
Along with the Live service outage, the Xbox.com forums will be read only and the rest of Xbox.com will be available with limited interruptions. There is no word on how long the maintenance will last.
