Yet another smartphone hits the market today, as HTC and Verizon team up to launch the HTC Ozone. The Ozone is a BlackBerry-style mobile with a front-facing full QWERTY keyboard. It's got a big 1500 mAH battery, VZ navigator, visual voice mail, mobile IM capability, 3G potential, and WiFi support.

Okay, so the Ozone isn't about to go head-to-head with the 3GS or even the HTC Hero. It doesn't have a touchscreen or a dead sexy UI (sorry Windows Mobile). That doesn't mean this new smartphone doesn't have anything going for it. The Ozone is the latest member of a burgeoning new sector of the mobile market; budget smartphones.
It costs just $50 as part of a 2 year contract after a $70 mail-in rebate. At that kind of price, we're willing to forgive some missing features. If you're a big gadget nerd, there's no way the HTC Ozone is going to satisfy your urges. But if you want to see what it's like to own a smartphone without plunking down $200-$300, this appears to be a solid buy.
