There are basically three strategies for buying Christmas gifts: Start really early like Summer, bet on Black Friday and Thanksgiving Deals or hunt the mall on the 24th of December.
It is not Summer anymore and I actually have ten hot gifts that you can and some you actually should buy now without being called crazy. If you see a Zhu Zhu Hamster for around 10 bucks somewhere just buy it and hide it in the cellar - it does not need food and does not poop. Zhu Zhu Pets are an example of a holiday gift that is EHTF (extremely hard to find).
It is not clear if the supply situation will get any better moving closer to the Holidays. eBay prices are more than double the normal price.
Another example is the PS3 Slim. The Sony boss recently warned about a PS3 shortage. Giving past experience you might get a gift certificate on top of the PS3 Slim on Black Friday, but you will not save a lot compared to buying it now for $299.
As a third example I like to mention the new iPod nano 5G (the one with the camera). You can buy this new iPod now because prices are rather stable for Apple products and you rarely see deep discounts. I would not recommend buying the new iPod touch as a gift right now, because there is a chance that Apple will release one with a camera before Christmas. Since prices will not vary and supply is pretty secure you can wait that one out.
As you see the list below contains no netbook and no notebook. Why? Because the Windows 7 release is later this month and all vendors will launch new models and we first need to let the dust settle on the hot Windows 7 hardware for the Holidays.
See below my recommendations of the Top 10 Tech Gifts For Christmas You Can Buy Now:
1) Zhu Zhu Pets
2) Sony PS3 Slim (unless you want the 250GB version)
3) iPod nano 5G
4) Dora Links
5) Xbox 360 Elite Holiday 2009 Bundle (Unless you want the 250GB Elite)
6) Mattel Mindflex
7) Nintendo Wii (You already get a $25 Gift Card with Purchase)
8) Amazon Kindle (Never know if it sells out again, like it did before)
9) Barbie Doll'd Up Nails Digital Nail Printer (A bit of a sick toy, but could become a sell-out)
10) Roku Digital Video Player
