Yahoo has created an iPhone-optimized version of its search engine tool, as well as a unique app that gives users a new way to search for local attractions.
Yahoo Sketch-a-Search is the more interesting of the two new apps. With it, users open up a map of their current area and draw a shape within the map. Yahoo then provides a list of all the attractions in that specified region. Users can then filter by star rating, type of cuisine, etc. By shaking the device, the search is reset.
Right now, only restaurants are included in the app, but more categories such as movie theaters or parks will be included in a later update.
That app hits the App Store today, as Yahoo's big entrance into the CTIA Wireless trade show going on this week. The Yahoo! Search app is also available, which is simply a Yahoo search engine built specifically for the iPhone. So it provides local results, integrates voice search, records search history for better results, and has the same "Shake to Clear" feature as Sketch-a-Search.
Before Android came along, Yahoo was making great strides in the mobile phone market, devoting numerous resources to mobile search and advertising. Google has since come in and tried to demolish the competition, however.
The two new Yahoo apps are available now for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
