Back before the iPad was revealed to the world, a lot of speculation had it pegged as being just a “giant iPhone”. While it's now clear that the iPad is much more than that, the folks who programmed the Truphone app have made those giant iPhone predictions come true. CrunchGear reports that this app allows you to use the iPad's speaker/mic and WiFi to turn it into a VOIP-phone.
Right now, you'll have to content yourself with making calls in WiFi hot-spots. When the 3G iPad's start to hit, though, this app could be seriously useful. Sure, using an iPad as a phone is so hilariously awkward it borders on the absurd. That doesn't mean it couldn't also come in handy. And the App is free. What are you waiting for?
