Fujitsu Has A Color E-Paper Breakthrough

Fujitsu Laboratories have sent out a press release today announcing the development of a “newly-enhanced” type of color e-paper. They brag that this new e-paper has the highest-level of color image quality in the world, plus a 7:1 contrast ratio. They've improved the image re-write speed to just .7 seconds, which is twice as fast as the previous generation.

This new color e-paper will be shown off at the Fujitsu Forum 2010, which will be held from May 13-14 in the Tokyo International Forum. Although there are few commercial uses for e-paper right now, the continued shrinking of CPUs and memory will soon allow for a whole new category of mobile device. Imagine a Kindle or an iPad that you could fold up and stick in your pocket without damaging.

E-paper also has a number of applications for wearable computing. You could make a wrist-band style smartwatch, or even clothing that acted as a wireless Bluetooth display for your smartphone. The age of the walking billboard is nearly upon us.
