Android 2.2 (or Froyo) isn't even out yet, and already we know the expected (rough) launch date for Android's next iteration. Gingerbread's release schedule was unveiled in the WebM media project's FAQ page. (via EuroDroid) Here is the full quote from the FAQ;

When will other Google products support WebM and VP8? “WebM support in Android is expected in the Gingerbread release (currently planned for Q4, 2010). We expect many other Google products to adopt WebM and VP8 as they prioritize it with their other product requirements. Keep an eye on the WebM blog for announcements”

So there we go; Q4 2010 will bring us Gingerbread. Just in time for the Christmas!
