Sony's main focus was not on the PS3 when it designed its brand new 3D products Web site, but that's where focus landed when it mentioned that PS3s start at $199.99.
On SonyStyle.com's new 3D page, it showcases TVs, home theaters, Blu-ray Disc players, and PS3s, and their related prices.
Under PS3s, it says "Starting at $299.99." However, earlier today it was, "Starting at $199.99."
Of course, E3 is next week and it always spurs a lot of announcements. With the base PS3 ($300) still more expensive than the Wii or Xbox 360's most basic unit ($200 each), a price cut of some sort is not a crazy thought.
It seems unlikely that Sony would make such a dramatic price drop, though, especially since the PS3 is now selling better than ever before. It was probably just a mistake on Sony's part. It's something to look for next week, though, nevertheless.
