For the first time, customers can go out to the store and find a Blu-ray 3D movie on the shelves: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
The Sony Pictures title is the first title that is available as a standalone Blu-ray Disc. The only other Blu-ray 3D movies have been licensed to TV manufacturers, effectively limiting them only to people who buy specific 3D TVs or 3D bundles.
Sony is also going to toss in a free copy of "Cloudy" to anyone who buys a Sony Bravia 3D TV, but it's now in stores as well for those who already have a 3D set from another manufacturer.
It is hopefully the beginning of a big wave of 3D content, as early adopters of 3D TVs are getting antsy at the shockingly small amount of content available, despite the fact that there's such a huge marketing push out there to buy the sets.
While the list price of the Blu-ray 3D version of the movie is the same as the $40 list price of the standard Blu-ray, retailers are selling it at a premium.
Amazon.com has the Blu-ray 3D at $27.99 while the standard Blu-ray is $17.99. Best Buy's prices stand at $34.99 and $29.99, respectively.
