The coolest thing about the new generation of smart meters that are being installed on homes in some parts of the country is that they allow the homeowner to tell how much power they are using and see what savings they get by turning things off. Knowing how much power you use and seeing the money you can save by cutting back is a cool thing.

If you live in an area where smart meters are not offered Smarthome has a cool new system from BlueLine called the PowerCost Monitor and Energy Meter II with WiFi Accessory. That is a long name to describe a system you can connect to your power cable coming into the home with no need for an electrician.

The system has a wireless screen that shows how much your power is costing you per hour. The system also keeps a running total of how much your bill will be for the month so far. Using that information you can move around the house turning things off to get the lowest electric bill possible. The kit costs $268.
