Motorola Milestone Gets Android 2.2 Next Month

UK customers have finally gotten word on when they'll get the hotly anticipated Android 2.2 update for the Motorola Milestone, known in the US as the hugely successful "Droid."
O2 will begin pushing out the 2.2 update, also known by its more trendy "Froyo" name, at the end of September, according to the mobile carrier's latest Twitter post.

Those who own the Droid in the US are expecting to get the update any day now, but they'll be disappointed when the update does not include one of the most tantalizing features - the ability to turn your phone into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. Verizon and Motorola specifically reworked the update file to erase that part of Android 2.2 because the phone is apparently not strong enough to handle it. In the UK, the Milestone was the first to get upgraded to Android 2.0, but other phone users - namely those with a Nexus One - got to jump on the Froyo bandwagon first.

The new update will be coming to the Mileston through all of Europe, but it is not as big of a story in a market where Samsung's Galaxy S series is starting to make a real wave. The Milestone is not nearly as strong of a sales juggernaut as the Droid is in the US.

Nevertheless, those with a Milestone can now start counting the days until their phone reaches a new milestone (sorry, I had to...) next month.
