Mobile phone juggernaut Nokia has just launched the C1-00 in India, and while it looks just like a standard Nokia handset, this one is special. It has support for two SIM cards.
The "dual SIM" market has become a hot commodity in India, where users often carry two phone numbers for different purposes - business, personal, etc. Other manufacturers have started accommodating this by offering phones that can handle two different numbers simultaneously.
Nokia has been eyeing the growing market and now officially has jumped in with this week's launch. The device itself has a very basic TFT screen, FM radio, and SMS functionality. Its staggering battery life of six weeks (on standby) shows just how much power the US's smartphones are guzzling up.
Anyway, the device has a toggle where users can switch between the two different SIM cards. Only one can be activated at a time.
Both this handset and the planned C2-00, which will also support dual SIM entry, run on Nokia's S40 operating system.
Although Nokia has lost touch with North America's growing hunger for iPhone and Android, it remains the #1 seller of mobile phones on a global scale, due to the fact that it has a very strong presence in regions of the world like India, as well as third-world countries.
