We already reported about LG calling their connected TVs Smart TV at the IFA 2010. Samsung is now also calling their TVs with web access and apps Smart TVs. Samsung even called out the Smart TV Challenge. The Smart TV Challenge calls on developers to come up with a smart app for Samsung TVs.
Smart TV as an industry wide naming convention make sense and i like the term. A market term is one thing, the question will be where the smarts for the TV are coming from. With a TV that has these features inside you are basically locked in for years. The stuff is getting out dated by the minute. A small box like the Apple TV or upcoming Android TV (Google TV) boxes are possible the more flexible strategy.
If you are interested in the Samsung Smart TV contest where you actually can get serious money. Samsung is putting over 500,000 Euros of prize money on the tablet that will go to the best apps developers. This contest is apparently just for Europe. More details here.
