A lot has happened since last year's Black Friday. Many new products are out, there's a lot of new buzzwords. But nothing quite shines the way 3D does, and as such you should expect to see 3D represented in a big way for this year's holiday shopping blitzkrieg.
In fact, it's almost unheard of to see a new consumer electronics trend explode so much in the span of less than a year. During last year's Black Friday, hardly anyone really cared that much about 3D. Now, it's part of everything - TV, computers, mobile phones, cameras, photo frames, and video games.
While it's still a new market and adoption rates aren't expected to really climb until at least next year, 3D is too big of a trend to not make its way to the biggest shopping holiday of the year.
A report earlier this year from TV industry tracker iSuppli suggested that all flat-panel TVs will reach over-saturation levels right around Black Friday time, leading to what will probably be the biggest TV sales ever seen on Black Friday.
This will definitely spill over to the 3D TV market, although the discounts won't be as great because they are high-end products and don't fall into the same over-produced problem facing smaller low-end sets. However, this is the first big holiday season to promote 3D TV sales and retailers are not going to give up on that opportunity. 3D TVs will get big presence in Black Friday ads, no doubt about it.
Also, expect 3D digital photo frames and cameras to be some of the definitive big novelty gifts this year. Prices for those are already reaching mass market levels so there's no doubt they'll be making a play for the Christmas tree this year.
3D computers are likely to be the least represented 3D products on Black Friday, mainly because they have the lowest demand right now. And 3D media (video games, Blu-ray) probably won't get the headlines - this year. In 2010 it's just about getting the hardware. Next year will be a different story as content will be the bigger focus.
Nevertheless, we'll be watching all the latest holiday 3D deals as the trend becomes more and more mainstream.
