Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu Linux OS, announced the availability Ubuntu 10.10. The new release will be available for Desktops and also as a special Netbook edition. Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition (Ubuntu Light) features a simplified user interface dubbed Unity. Unity is a new interface for Ubuntu that is making its debut in Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition. It is designed for highly mobile computing, making the most of precious screen space on mobile devices.

The Unity interface also supports touch and gestures for the increasing number of devices that will support it, with larger icons and a more touch-intuitive interface. This would mean that Ubuntu is also usable for Tablet computers. Ubuntu's netbook OS boots in only 7 seconds and offers basic features to use the web and internet services.

The new Ubuntu 10.10 release is available for free download on October 10th.

Digitimes reports that Dell is most likely first to release a new netbook with Ubuntu 10.10.

As reported Toshiba unveiled a hot Android netbook several month ago. We are still waiting for a release of the Toshiba AC100.
