I was excited when Netflix announced that it would be bringing Netflix streaming to the PS3. I was a bit bummed when I learned that you would have to use a disc to be able to stream the content on the PS3. That disc was a concession to the "exclusive" access the Xbox 360 offered that didn’t need a disc.
Apparently, that exclusive period is over, starting next week PS3 users can toss that disc. Sony has announced on the Official Playstation Blog that starting on Monday October 18th users will be able to stream all the Netflix content they want with no disc needed.
That also makes it easier for new customers to stream Netflix content because they won’t need to wait for a disc to show up. Along with the disc leaving, the streaming has been improved with a faster and richer browsing experience and faster start to the playback of video. The update will also bring some movies and TV shows to users in 1080i resolution and with Dolby 5.1 sound.
