If you're happy with your TV, don't need a computer, and already have a GPS for your car, you may be wondering, "Why would I shop on Black Friday?" Walmart has the answer for you.
Yes, Walmart is realizing that only discounting high-profile items systematically excludes a good portion of customers. Although those items are usually the highest-margin products, they only appeal to people who need them.
In an interview with Retailing Today, Walmart US CEO Bill Simon said the company will return to its roots this holiday season, offering significant savings on virtually everything throughout the store.
Walmart had begun to shift its focus, making big-ticket items attractive as loss leaders to get people in the store, then charging the same kind of prices as other retailers for everything else.
No more, said Simon. For this holiday season, the retailer will focus on price-sensitive shoppers who want low prices on everything. So, for Black Friday, expect Wal-Mart's ad to be much more all-encompassing. Sure it will still have the cheap TVs and computers, but unlike the traditional Black Friday fare, other stuff like toys, games, and electronics will probably be deeply discounted as well.
Competition is expected to be greater than ever for this year's Black Friday. Americans are still hurting from the financial downturn, but many are finding their way back to the workforce or are at least more hopeful about the future. Shopping is expected to go up compared to last year, and stores know this. However, price is still a very important factor in everyone's holiday shopping.
Retailers have excess product in some of the biggest categories - like electronics - and need to move them out as much as possible over the next two months. The result of all this should be great deals for consumers.
Walmart is expected to release their highly anticipated Black Friday 2010 Ad on November 21st.
