The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced today that a new wireless spec for peer-to-peer WiFi data sharing has launched. The new specification is called Wi-Fi Direct and allows two devices to directly connect to each other using WiFi without needing a hot spot.
The new specification will allow users to share photos and other data between each other and with other devices without having to set up a complex peer-to-peer network or needing a Wireless connection. The tech only requires one of the phones in the pair to have Wi-Fi Direct installed.
The other device can connect using existing hardware and software. Apparently, the Wi-Fi Direct capability can be added to existing devices in the future via a software download. The service will also allow users to get web access at distances further that they ordinarily can at a future date.
