Gran Turismo 5 Going To 2011? Good Lord...

Totally shocking, but kinda totally expected too

Hey, remember when Sony made that huge presentation at E3 over the summer and shouted out, "Hey! We finally have an official, confirmed, real release date for Gran Turismo 5"? Yeah, well, haha. It looks like the joke's on you.

It's November 3. If you were to believe what Sony said just a few months ago, you'd find Gran Turismo 5 PS3 discs on store shelves right now. But if you can actually go out and find one, then you'd have to be Marty McFly from Back to the Future. The game still isn't finished.

Online retailers like Amazon and are now listing Gran Turismo 5 for a 2011 release. The stores have reportedly received word from the publisher that the game isn't quite ready for the limelight and a holiday release is now looking dicey.

The game was first announced in 2005. I remember playing an early build of it in 2006. After a long drought of official updates it was set for a release in 2009. But that was scrapped before anyone even talked about an official date. Then, at E3, Sony boldly and proudly stated it had a specific date. Nope. That didn't happen either.

In an earlier New York Times interview, producer Taku Imasaki said, "We're not happy over here." That came after an official announcement last month that the game would miss its November 2 release date.

Gran Turismo 5 is perhaps the most ambitious console racing game ever. With more than 70 tracks, around 1,000 vehicles rendered in the game, official licenses up the wazoo, and a budget of $60 million, the long development time is understandable, if a bit frustrating.

For its part, Sony is still trying to save face. "As far as the Amazon date goes, retailers have arbitrary dates that get listed," the company said in part. In fact, it's being reported that the game is actually finished and the discs are being pressed. Yet Sony still doesn't have a new release date for us.

The official stance is that Gran Turismo 5 is still set for a holiday release, but given its history, I wouldn't plan to make extra room under the Christmas tree just yet.
