Today I am going to check out the Case-Mate DIY Tough case. The Case-Mate DIY Tough is a cool case that has dual layer protection for your iPhone 4 and you can get any of your personal photos on the thing that you want or art that Case-Mate has online. Read on for all of the details on the Case-Mate DIY Tough.

Specifications

The Case-Mate DIY Tough case is $39.99 and you can get a customized case called Barely There for $34.99. The image you upload needs to be at least 1650 x 1650 pixels and the larger resolution the file the better the image will look. The same case design is offered for the iPhone 3G/3GS, Blackberry Bold, iPod touch 2G, and the Blackberry Curve.

In Use

The design process for the Case-Mate DIY Tough is very simple. All you need to do is go to the Case-Mate is the and select the DIY case option. You will be taken to a screen where you can choose art that is offered from Case-Mate or a prompt to choose a photo and upload it from your computer. The image I uploaded was considerable larger than the image requirements.

The custom order site gives you the tools that you need to resize and move the image you are using around to fit the case. You can shrink the image down to fit the case perfectly and the image wraps around the sides of the case as well on the Tough. The image quality is very good with the test image I used. Again, my uploaded picture was much higher resolution than the minimum needed. A low resolution image will not look as good as mine.

With my test image the printed case looks exactly like the image I uploaded. The colors are accurate and natural and the thing looks fantastic. The case has sort of a semi gloss sheen to it and you can see the light Case-Mate logo on the bottom of the case. The Tough case I chose is right under $40 and has two layers of protection. The inner layer is a plan black silicon skin and the outer layer with my photo on is a hard plastic.

The camera on the back and the flash are left uncovered and the controls are all accessible. The Case-Mate DIY Tough is surprisingly thin given the dual layer construction of the thing. This case also ships with a special screen protection film. This is a case that will protect your device very well from the bumps and drops that most smartphones go through. Being able to get your own picture on the case is very cool as well. I guarantee that everyone you know will ask you where you got the case.

Verdict

Pros

  • Cool customization with your own picture
  • Lots of protection
  • Cheap for a custom product

Cons

  • Screen protector isn't the best

Conclusion

I really like this case and the custom picture is something you won’t find on any other case. The Case-Mate DIY Tough offers lots of protection and is the ultimate in customized accessories for your iPhone 4.
