The new iPad 2 is not even official yet in any form, but the big topic now is already the iPad 3. Daring Fireball kicked of the discussion about a new iPad 3 to already be unveiled in September at the Fall Apple iPod event.
The iPad 3 would then run the iOS 5.1, but hardware-wise there is no information yet. Apple is expected to unveil the iPad 2 in the next week and start selling it in April. Why would Apple release already a new iPad 3 in Fall? John Gruber "guesses" because Apple wants to move the big iPad announcements to Fall. This year these would mean two releases of the iPad and then in 2012 the iPad 4 would come out along with the iPods in September. September is ideal to unveil new products for the big holiday sales season.
I actually see the importance of the fourth quarter even increasing. The month long Black Friday 2011 Sales event will even drive more sales than last year. It is important for consumer electronics companies to align their new products with this season more than ever.
So should you wait for the iPad 3 to get an iPad 2? The new iPad 3 might not be that different from the iPad 2 that is already in production. The purchase decision for the iPad should be more about on what you want to do with it. I am still fine to do most things on my iPhone. The only sexy thing that would want me to get an iPad is a digital newsstand with magazines and newspapers around the world. I have though the feeling that this is still at least 6 month away.
So in my case, I think I wait for the iPad 3.
