Apple iPhone 5 ships in October and iPhone 6 in June of 2012

The iPhone 5 is a moving target in the Apple rumor mill. Some rumors claim a 2012 release and others a Fall 2011 release of the next Apple iPhone. Today analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Concord Securities released a note with iPhone 5 details. According to Kuo Apple will start mass production of the iPhone 5 in September. This would lead to an October shipping date. He also says that the iPhone 6 will be back on a June release in 2012.

According to this analyst report the iPhone 5 is a performance upgrade with Apple A5 CPU, 8MP rear camera and iOS 5. The design stays the same. The iPhone 6 in 2012 would involve bigger hardware changes. The iPhone 5 would also sport a dual mode (CDMA and GSM) Qualcomm chip. This would allow Apple to just have one model for AT&T and Verizon.

More details of Kuo's report can be found on AppleInsider. AppleInsider mentions two predictions about Apple products from Kuo that proved correct. This puts a lot of credibility into this report.

Apple needs to release a new iPhone in 2011. According to many rumors over the last few weeks, Apple is not releasing the new iPhone 5 in June as it has done in the past years. Apple is said to align the iPhone 5 with the Q4 holiday shopping season. This makes a lot of sense, but leaves the next months open for Android to bombarded consumers with new Android phones that outshine the iPhone 4 in terms of hardware performance. Apple risks losing marketshare in the mobile OS space again.
