iPhone Updates after iOS 5 come Over The Air?

Verizon iPhone users might get iOS 5 update OTA.

Apple is expected to release iOS 5 in fall along with the new iPhone 5. A new rumor report over at 9to5Mac says that Apple and Verizon plan to give customers the option to get updates over the air. iOS 5 is supposed to have that feature set. This means any update after iOS 5 could come also OTA, like for Android and other smartphone OSes.

How the update process is going to look in detail is not clear yet. Problems to be solved are in the size of the iOS updates and the backing up of the iPhone data. In any case it is a natural next step for Apple to remove another dependency for customers to need a PC with iTunes for the iPhone and iPad.

As reported yesterday Apple is rumored to also get rid of the dependency for discs for Mac updates. Apple is likely using the Mac App Store for delivery fo the update. All these topics should be revealed in detail at the WWDC 2011 next month.
