Specifications

The Micro Lightning is one of the several helicopter toys that Swann announced not too long ago. This helicopter has gyro technology for stabile flight, a full function remote control and trim controls. Power comes from an internal rechargeable battery and the Micro Lightning ships with spare rotors. The Micro Lightning sells for $69.99.

In Use

This is the coolest RC helicopter toy I have tried. I have played with these things in the past and typically, they are made from plastic that will break and doesn't feel sturdy. The Micro Lightning is made from metal and only the fairing is plastic. It has a red and blue flashing LED underneath for style. The helicopter is powered by an internal rechargeable battery that charges via a USB cable. The remote control unit requires six AA batteries and the more has its own charge cable for charging the helicopter too.

The controller has three channels so you can fly three of the copters at once if you want. This helicopter is designed for indoor use only. Any sort of breeze makes the Micro Lightning very difficult to control I had to run off my ceiling fans to prevent the Micro Lightning from going out of control.

Swann rates the battery in the helicopter for eight minutes of flight per change, and that is almost exactly, how long it was able to fly. When the battery runs out of juice the helicopter will not stay in the air and falls to the floor. The copter comes with an extra set of blades too so if you crash and break one set you have spares.

The Micro Lightning has two sets of rotors on top that spin in opposite directions to allow the helicopter to hover without needing the tail rotor to spin all the time. The tail rotor activates when you turn the helicopter left or tight. The remote unit has a left stick that controls the rotor speed and thereby controls up and gown. The right stick controls left and right rotation of the helicopter and forward and backward movement too. This helicopter is so much fun I wish I had more to play with! I only wish the battery inside lasted longer so I could fly more on a charge.

Verdict

Pros

  • Easy to control
  • Fast charging
  • Tons of fun

Cons

  • Only eight minutes per flight

Conclusion

The Swann Micro Lightning helicopter is much better built than the cheap plastic toys you get at the local discount store. This is more of a hobby grade helicopter with metal parts and it is so much fun! I love it!
