Today Google unveiled the next major update to Android and it will be called Ice Cream Sandwich. The goal with Ice Cream Sandwich is to deliver one operating system that works everywhere, regardless of device. Android Ice Cream Sandwich will bring the cool features of Honeycomb on your tablet to your phone, including the holographic user interface, more multitasking, the new launcher and richer widgets. This is exactly what I asked for in our earlier report. A single Android OS for all mobile devices is a must. Android 4.0 will arrive in Q4. Until then Google will release HoneyComb 3.1 with some improvements for tablet users.
Google also revealed some stunning numbers illustrating the success of Android so far:
Google also announced that movie rentals will be available on the Android Market. You can choose to rent from thousands of movies starting at $1.99 and have them available across your Android devices—rent a movie on your home computer, and it’ll be available for viewing on your tablet or phone. You can rent from Android Market on the web today, and they’ll be rolling out an update to Verizon XOOM customers beginning today. Google will start rolling out the update to Android 2.2 and above devices in the coming weeks.
Lastly Google launched Android@Home. This project allows Android apps to discover, connect and communicate with appliances and devices in your home.
