Is the tablet now hurting netbooks sales yes or no? Earlier today we reported that retail research company NPD Group believes that the tablet is not hurting netbook sales. The tablet and the iPad specifically created a new market that has not impacted netbooks. Now consumer electronics company ViewSonic chimes into that discussion according to Digitimes. They expect that the tablet PC will replace 70% of netbook sales in 2011. ViewSonic sees the netbook ending up in a niche market.
A couple of days ago we reported that Acer is still behind the netbook. I am starting to believe that nobody really knows where netbooks sales will go this year. I still believe that there is a sizable market for the sub-$200 netbook market. Netbooks that are more expensive will suffer as consumers spend their money on tablets like the Apple iPad. Black Friday 2011 will see tons of tablet deals (Android), but very few netbook offers. Tablets are sexy and will drive shoppers into the stores this holiday shopping season. The budget netbook has become a commodity.
