With success comes viruses and malware as we reported earlier this month. Apple Mac computers have the image of being totally secure. Almost no Apple user is running anti-virus software. A recent rather simple exploit is causing a lot of agony for unsuspecting Apple customers. ZDNet's Ed Bott got a hold of an unidentified AppleCare rep that confirms the dramatic rise of support calls concerning Mac Defender and variants.
Apparently a lot of Apple customers are falling for the fake security software download and install it. The interesting part is that AppleCare is not officially supposed to help with malware removal. This is excluded in the terms. Many of the reps are still helping customers to get rid of the malware, essentially risking their their job.
I really think Apple needs to act on this growing problem of malware and protect its customers. This does not only require a software solution, but also education and information. Of course Apple does not like to draw attention to this issue, but at some point the company will have no choice than to actively face it.
