The rumors about the next iPhone, may it be called iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S, already say that Apple will use a communication chip that supports GSM and CDMA. This will allow Apple to just make one iPhone model and give Verizon the benefit that the iPhone they sell will also work globally.
Verizon CFO Fran Shammo confirmed at the Reuters Global Technology Summit (Reuters) that indeed the next iPhone has dual-mode.
When asked about LTE Shammo did not say if the next iPhone has LTE support. He said that for Verizon it does not matter. They have enough Android LTE phones. He sees the lack of LTE support in the iPhone as a bigger problem for Apple.

"After a brief issue this morning, 4G LTE service is fully restored," a Verizon spokeswoman tells Light Reading Mobile. Verizon users in the New York, Ohio and other cities started to complain about both LTE and 3G CDMA problems on Twitter this morning. ...
