Apple is rumored since a while to work on new versions of the Time Capsule and the AirPort Extreme. In a new AirPort Utility released yesterday, strings for the 4th Generation Time Capsule and 5th Generation AirPort Extreme have been spotted according to 9to5Mac. 9to5Mac points also out that software update caching could be one of the new features. Text found in the code of the AirPort Utility supports that assumption. MacRumors reports though that the Software Update Caching strings are there since last year. That the Time Capsule would download and cache updates for the Mac and iOS is a neat feature, but only really useful for larger groups sharing a Time Capsule. Apple might just never release that niche feature.
Before the iCloud release, there was a grand rumor that the Time Capsule could be used as personal storage through the iCloud. I still like the idea and I am pretty sure that Apple will bake some iCloud tie-in into the new Time Capsule.
