The Facebook app for the iPad is actually already here. It is hidden and it is apparently not finished, but if you have a jailbroken iPad you can run it today. TechCrunch found a working version what is thought to be the pretty close to the final Facebook iPad app inside the current Facebook iPhone app. You can see in the screenshots that TechCrunch published a pretty rich interface that makes Facebook a pretty nice experience on the iPad.
As mentioned above to run this build of the Facebook iPad app you need to jailbreak your iPad, which is something Apple does not like you to do and you need to be aware of the technical risks. The Next Web published a step-by-step guide to run the Facebook app on the iPad.
If this leak will accelerate the release of the Facebook iPad app is unclear.
Update:
Facebook is now blocking this hack to run the Facebook iPad app according to TechCrunch.
