The Best Buy Super Bowl 2012 commercial will not have glitzy celebrities like last year. Instead, Best Buy is featuring gadget inventors like Philippe Kahn, who created one of the first camera phones. Another Silicon Valley celebrity appearing in the Best Buy spot is Kevin Systrom, developer of Instagram.
According to BusinessWeek, via Super Bowl Ads for Geeks, Best Buy changed their minds after the death of Steve Jobs. Initially Best Buy planned to continue the celebrity theme they started last year with Justin Bieber and Ozzy Osbourne. The huge number of tributes that came in from consumers around the globe made Best Buy's Marketing Chief Drew Panyiotou realize that Silicon Valley Inventors are today's stars.
I see a great fit between Best Buy and Silicon Vally Inventors. It makes sense to associate with people who make the great gadgets, Best Buy is selling. The only problem I see is to make the Best Buy Super Bowl 2012 Ad stand out and resonate with viewers.
To make matters worse, Best Buy confirmed to BusinessWeek that the Best Buy Super Bowl 2012 Ad is not funny. The 2012 Best Buy Super Bowl commercial might be able to connect with geeks, which is not a bad thing. Geeks are multipliers when it comes to gadgets and where to buy them. If Best Buy gets on the top of the list in Geek minds than Best Buy accomplished their goal of selling more consumer electronics.
