BMW has instigated a massive recall in cooperation with the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall covers 367,000 5 and 6 series cars manufactured from 2004 to 2010. The reason for the recall is a loose battery cable connector in the trunk that poses a potential to overheat.
BMW says that in extreme cases the overheating could lead to a smoldering fire in the trunk mat leading to possible BMW flambé. BMW says it only knows of one actual fire in the US. The company suggests owners of affected cars should park the car outdoors until the battery cable can be replaced.
