Tablets steel Ultrabooks' thunder. Will that change with Windows 8?

Ultrabooks are the Windows world answer to the MacBook Air. Consumers did not fully buy into Ultrabooks mostly because of pricing. Canalys reports that PC shipments rose 12% in Q2 fueled by tablet sales. Ultrabook sales are disappointing. The report says that tablet sales are now 22% of all PC sales.

Apple is again the overall global market leader in PC shipments with 19% market share. This is mostly attributed by strong iPad sales.

When Windows 8 is released on October 26th the market shares will likely change in favor of Windows PC makers. If Windows 8 Ultrabooks will be selling well in the last quarter remains to be seen. Tablets and tablet keyboard combinations like the Microsoft Surface are more affordable alternatives for many consumers.
