Amazon did not yet enter the smartphone segment, but they likely work on it. Yesterday Amazon suprised though to take on Apple directly with the introduction of a high-end 8.9-inch tablet. Meet the Kindle Fire HD.
Amazon has scheduled a press-event today starting at 10am PDT. It is clear that Amazon will unveil new Kindle Fire tablets and new Kindle eReader. The internet retailer is possibly also revealing its smartphone plans according to sources of The Verge.
Amazon is according to the sources not finished making the Amazon Phone. So it would be just a preview. Amazon has its own forked Android version that runs on the Kindle Fire. The same OS version is likely also be used for the Amazon smartphone. The mapping app is supposed to be coming from Nokia. As a lot of smartphones can be had for free on contract, it is going to be interesting to see how Amazon is topping this.
My guess is that you get the Amazon Phone without contract for $49.99. Amazon's model for their devices is that they make the money through the content you buy.
